This Popeye Tattoo is Strong to the Finich

Some tattoos are clever in content — funny phrases, images that work differently depending on how you look at them or when paired with another — and others are just plain inventive. Case in point: This Popeye tatoo based on everyone’s favorite spinach-eating sailor.

CBR Ink found the image via Boing Boing, who also included a link to a facebook photo where the artist, Alina Fokina, was credited. Interestingly, several people in the comments sounded off that this was not an original idea, and that someone else had done it better previously — but not with Popeye.

This tattoo was originally posted in April by Redditor Dre2k, and is based on Eiichiro Oda’s “One Piece” manga which is serialized in “Shonen Jump.” In the piece, protagonist Monkey D. Luffy’s Gear Third form merges with the tattoo owner’s own hand, much like in the manga and its anime counterpart.

Which tattoo makes the concept work better?

I’m partial to Popeye, but you can’t go wrong with either, they both look phenomenal.

  2. The Popeye’s tattoo is BY FAR better executed. The perspective and proportions work perfectly.

The One’ Piece Tattoo, well… if you’re not gonna say anything good about a tattoo, better don’t say anything.

I’ve seen both before (not in person, of course). These pics have been on the geek sites for quite sometime now. Both are nice, but my pick will be the Luffy tatz.

My vote is for the popeye. Better proportioned I think. Both look good though.

Good to have a CBR ink update.
